The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve in the M57 & M47 is a mandatory pollution control device for all diesel-engine vehicles. Some gasoline models are also equipped with this component. Its primary function is to redirect exhaust gases back into the intake manifold for re-combustion. This process significantly reduces the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions produced by the engine. Over time, this valve can become clogged with carbon deposits, leading to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and potential mechanical issues if chances of carbon deposits fell into the engine.
Why Remove the EGR Valve?
However, due to its operating mechanism, the EGR valve is prone to rapid clogging caused by carbon deposits (commonly referred to as soot). Over time, these deposits can build up and block the valve, leading to various issues, including:
- Increased vehicle emissions
- A stuck valve, causing mechanical failure
- Damage to the intake system
- Reduced engine power
Removing the EGR valve using a delete kit is a straightforward way to restore optimal performance. This removal also offers additional benefits, such as:
Reasons for Removing the EGR Valve:
- Improved Engine Performance: Eliminating the EGR valve can enhance airflow to the engine, resulting in better combustion and increased power.
- Reduced Carbon Build-up: By removing the EGR system, you can prevent the accumulation of carbon deposits in the intake manifold and related components.
- Enhanced Fuel Efficiency: Some users report improved fuel economy after deleting the EGR system.

How to Remove the EGR Valve on a BMW M57 & M47:
- Preparation:
- Ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues.
- Access the EGR Valve:
- Remove the engine cover to expose the EGR valve, typically located at the front of the engine near the intake manifold.
- Disconnect Components:
- Detach the vacuum hose connected to the EGR valve. It’s advisable to plug this hose to prevent any vacuum leaks.
- Unbolt and remove the EGR valve from its position.
- Install EGR Delete Kit:
- Replace the removed EGR valve with an EGR delete kit, which usually includes a bypass pipe and necessary fittings. Ensure all connections are secure to prevent leaks.
- Reassemble:
- Reattach any components that were removed and reconnect the battery.
- ECU Consideration:
- Some models may require reprogramming of the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to prevent error codes or warning lights after the EGR system has been deleted.
Alternative to Removal:
If you’re concerned about the implications of removing the EGR valve, consider regular cleaning to maintain its functionality. This involves removing the valve and using appropriate cleaners to eliminate carbon deposits.
